How to approach a fly shop?

As the river and its conditions are ever-changing, it is up to us to utilize the resources around us to find the best - real-time - reports and conditions. One of the best resources to use is the folks who spend time on the water every day - your local fly shop. At times, it can be tough walking in and asking questions but we wanted to keep you armed with the best possible approach that will lead to a successful trip. Hey, while your at it, stop in and support the local fly shop … purchase a few of those “hot” flies and give them a shout out.

Questions to ask your local fly shop:

  • What bugs to use?
  • What time of day does the fishing tend to turn on?
  • Where are they feeding? In the skinny water? Still in deeper pocket water? Slower moving runs?
  • Depth at which they are feeding?
