What if I don’t have cell phone service, how do I download GPS Coordinates?

We always suggest downloading your GPS coordinates to your phone via your map app, like TroutRoutes or onX. Remember, not all properties have cell service, so having those coordinates handy will help ensure a smooth fishing adventure!

Here's how:

  1. Get the exact spot: You can find this on a map, from someone, or maybe even from a photo. RareWaters sends this out to you via map. All you have to do is copy it or click the link on it to get to your map app.
  2. Use your phone's map: Most phones have a built-in map app. Open it up.
  3. Type in the spot: Look for a search bar on the map. Type in the address or the special numbers for the place (like latitude and longitude) or paste it from the map we sent over. These numbers are like secret codes for a location.
  4. Pin it: Once you find the spot, you can usually mark it with a pin. This helps you remember it.
  5. Download it. See notes below to learn how to use your map "off-line" or without cell service.

You can't download a whole map to use offline like you download a movie. Maps are too big!

But, you can download a part of a map to use when you don't have internet.

Here's how (it might be a little tricky):

  1. Find a good map app: Many phones come with a map app already. RareWaters suggests TroutRoutes or onX Hunt.
  2. Pick the place: Decide where you want to go without internet or use the pin of the GPS coordinates you just added to your phone as your place/location.
  3. Download the area: Look for a setting in your map app that says something like "download map" or "offline maps." You'll be able to choose a part of the map to save. Choose the part of the map that has the pinned areas of the GPS coordinates. Always go a bit bigger than you expected to try and get the whole property.
  4. Wait: It might take a little time to download.
  5. Use it offline: Once it's done, you can use that part of the map even when you don't have internet.

Remember:

  • You can only download a small part of a map at a time.
  • The downloaded map might not be as detailed as the online one.
